Trailering your boat?
Find a place to launch before arriving
A majority of Michigan’s boaters often trailer their vessels to various lakes and communities for exploring the state’s endless lakes and rivers.
Finding a launch site is an important first step to help make the trip go more smoothly and enjoyably for the captain and the whole family. Many privately owned marinas offer launch services on the Great Lakes and inland lakes around Michigan. To find a marina in the area you plan to visit, check this directory or go to the directory at tab at www.boatmichigan.org and search for “launch ramp.”
Public launches are located on lakes both large and small. It is important to choose lakes that are suitable for your boat’s size and to keep an eye on weather conditions. The state also provides public access points throughout Michigan and along the Great Lakes shoreline.
For a complete listing of the state’s public boating access sites, visit www.boatmichigan.org; click on the resource tab at the top, then select Boating Information to see the “Boating Access Site (BAS) Permit Sites” link. It will take you to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources directory of launches. Boaters are required to purchase an annual $24 launch access permit or a $6 daily permit, available at the access sites. Privately owned marinas typically charge a small launch fee as well.
