Emmet County's Public Parkland
Emmet County’s vast tracts of thickly forested lands and expanses of clear, clean waters are priceless recreational areas for the county’s residents and visitors. Emmet County’s leaders have taken steps through the decades to make sure they stay that way. Today, nearly 30 percent of the county’s 300,000 acres is in public ownership (among federal, state and local governments).
The highlights:
The Headlands

Encompassing more than 600 acres of verdant woodlands and more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline, the Headlands property is a gem. Visitors may glimpse native wildlife such as bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer, turkeys, coyotes and black bear. Marked nature trails wind through the acreage guiding hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers and photographers past wetlands and through old-growth forests in each breathtaking season of the year. Two large, waterfront residences are available to rent (accommodating about 20 each) for weddings, reunions, family picnics and professional retreats. (231) 436-4051.
McGulpin Point Lighthouse

In its inaugural season in 2009, thousands of area residents and visitors from across the country came to Emmet County to view the newest piece in the parks’ collection. Originally the site of an Odawa village, McGulpin Point was established in 1869 and served as a crucial beacon on the Straits of Mackinac as it guided vessels through the shoal-filled waters. By 1906, the property had reverted to private ownership until its purchase and historic restoration by Emmet County beginning in 2008.
There is no charge to visit the lighthouse. Hours are May: noon to 5 p.m.; June-September: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and October: noon to 5 p.m.

Today, Emmet County maintains its 300 acres that provide year-round recreation to visitors. Nature trails, a swimming beach on Pickerel Lake and trout fishing are among the offerings for day and overnight guests. Facilities include 90 campsites with electricity and water, modern restrooms and showers, four-season rental cabins, playground equipment and open field game areas. There is also a recreational hall/multi-use building for rent.
Cecil Bay
A mile of unspoiled shoreline and 800 acres of wilderness to explore are the characteristics that make Cecil Bay so appealing to so many. The property, west of Mackinaw City, also boasts a boardwalk and sandy beaches perfect for picnicking and sunbathing after a swim in Lake Michigan. Fishing is permitted on the Carp River, which flows through the park.
