When the first snow falls, everyone wants to be at the ski slopes or sledding hill as quickly as possible. Dressing appropriately can make the outing more enjoyable if you’re not battling discomfort.
Layering is the key to keeping warm from the chill of the outdoors. You can always take layers off, but you can’t put more clothes on if you don’t have them. Waterproof, breathable gear is best. A turtleneck, sweater and an insulated coat are necessities to keep the wind from sneaking in. On the legs, long underwear, pants and insulated snow pants or wind pants keep a skier warm. Jeans will not do.
A hat that covers the ears is important, because a great deal of heat is lost through the head, and ears are very susceptible to frostbite.
Waterproof gloves and thick socks are essentials. Always bring a pair of socks or gloves in case a pair get wet. Cold hands or feet can ruin the best day’s winter fun.
